Medical Service Team

Specialized in Pain Management

About The Department

The Medical Service Team consists of Doctors, Nurse Practitioners and skilled nurses that focus on optimizing medical treatments as well as discussing interventional options. The goal which is stated from the beginning is to educate the patients to understand for themselves the importance of increasing activity while utilizing medications as a short-term support. A long-term goal of reducing the reliance of medication is also established early.

Department Services

A comprehensive medical history, physical, and neurologic examination is performed to evaluate and identify the patient’s overall experience of chronic pain. Functional and psychosocial assessments are co-ordinated with the Behavioral Health Service Team where appropriate. This information provides a preliminary impression for the Medical Service Team.

During the initial evaluation, the Medical Service Team may perform further evaluations and diagnostic tests including laboratory tests, imaging, and further specialist consultations.

A patient-provider collaborative approach is utilized for the selection of pain management treatment.  In assessing the treatment plan, outcome measures are collected and utilized for diagnosis and for future assessment of treatment efficacy. Treatment plans include pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic options.

A biopsychosocial care plan is an essential element to effective pain management. Specialty interdisciplinary pain medicine team consultation, collaborative care, and (when indicated) mental health and addiction services are made readily available throughout the course of treatment to help ensure the best patient outcomes.

We utilize several categories of medications for pain management treatment. The most commonly used medications are typically divided into the following five categories:

  1. Nonsteroidal Anti-inflammatory Drugs (NSAIDs)
  2. Antidepresssants
  3. Anticonvulsants
  4. Muscle Relaxants
  5. Opioids

Interventional pain management techniques can be helpful for the management of chronic pain. These techniques which include injections such as Epidural Steroid Injections, Nerve Blocks, Joint Injections, etc. help to directly address the source of your pain.

Advanced techniques for pain management may be utilized to further target the source of the chronic pain.  These advanced techniques include: Radiofrequency Ablation, Spinal Cord Stimulator Implants, Intrathecal Pump Implants, Plasma Rich Platelets Injections, Stem Cell Injections, etc.
